FOOD

The first days of quarantine were filled with boredom, which I combated with the upsurge of global internet trends and the extra time to do new things— or in this case, new recipes. The rise of Dalgona Coffee or “whipped coffee” is arguably the most popular food trend since beyond burgers and oat milk lattes. Taking the internet by storm earlier in 2020, whipped coffee is a crowd favorite due to the recipe’s simplicity coupled with a surprisingly delicious outcome that challenges the traditional iced coffee or iced latte. While making whipped coffee is slightly more labor-intensive than the traditional latte, the result is a much more creamy and smooth drink.
What is Whipped Coffee and why is it so popular?
Whipped coffee originated from South Korea, hence also going by the name of Dalgona Coffee which was picked up due to the drinks resemblance to the popular Dalgona street toffee. Due to its aesthetic appeal, easily available ingredients, and dessert-like taste, this drink quickly became a hot trend on TikTok and YouTube. This drink requires only four ingredients which can be altered in various ways to comply with personal taste. In this article, I will include 4 additional variations of recipes for whipped coffee: Keto whipped coffee, whipped matcha latte, whipped chocolate milk, and a spiked whipped coffee.
How to make the Classic Whipped Coffee:
As previously mentioned, the ingredients required are minimal and this recipe will take around five minutes to prepare. Before starting, you will need instant coffee— I recommend Nescafe’s instant coffee. You can use any brand, but it must be in the form of instant coffee as any other type of coffee will not work.
Step one: In a bowl, combine two tablespoons of instant coffee and one tablespoon of sugar (brown sugar or white sugar will both work) with two tablespoons of hot water.
Step two: The next step is to whisk together the ingredients in the bowl either by hand or with an electric whisk (this will significantly speed up the process, but it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes for the coffee to turn foamy). By the end of the process, the mixture should have peaks and should lighten in color.
Step three: In a glass, add ice cubes (as many as you would like) with your choice of milk. Scoop the coffee, sugar, water mixture out on top of the milk in the glass.
Step four: Gently stir the mixture and drink up!
How to make a Keto Whipped Coffee:
This recipe is meant for all those who are currently on a Keto diet and feel like they want to try a sugar-free and keto friendly version of this drink. Due to its low carb, high fat, and sugar free properties, this drink is perfect for those who want to maintain Keto.
Ingredients: Instant coffee, granulated Stevia (or any kind of granulated sugar-free sweetener), nut milk or whole milk, hot water, optional: vanilla extract, cinnamon
Step one: In a bowl, combine two tablespoons of instant coffee and one tablespoon of granulated sweetener (I would recommend Stevia) with two tablespoons of hot water.
Step two: Whisk together the ingredients in the bowl either by hand or with an electric whisk (this will significantly speed up the process, but it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes for the coffee to turn foamy). By the end of the process, the mixture should have peaks and should lighten in color. Here you can add a dash of optional vanilla extract or cinnamon.
Step three: In a glass, add ice cubes (as many as you would like) with your choice of milk. This is the primary source of your carbs— you can also mix in half and half or heavy whipping cream to up your fat intake. Scoop the coffee, sweetener, water mixture out on top of the milk in the glass.
Step four: Gently stir the mixture and drink up!
How to make a Whipped Matcha latte:

This drink is a lighter, sweeter alternative to whipped coffee but is just as delicious and gives you the many health benefits of matcha powder such as reducing blood sugar and cholesterol. One thing to note however, is that this recipe requires raw egg white, which can be replaced with coconut cream for those of you that are squeamish at the sight of raw egg.
Ingredients: one raw egg white, one tablespoon of matcha powder, one tablespoon of sugar, ice cubes, milk of choice
Step one: In a bowl, whisk the egg white until it forms stiff peaks (you can hand whisk it, but an electric whisk will greatly speed up the process and reduce your effort).
Step two: Add in the sugar and continue whisking until the egg whites form a stiff peak consistency and appear to be white
Step three: Slowly add in the matcha powder to the egg mixture and continue whisking until evenly blended
Step four: Add the mixture into the a glass of milk and ice cubes and enjoy!
How to make Whipped Chocolate Milk:
Here’s a sweeter, caffeine free take on whipped coffee for all you chocolate lovers out there. This drink doubles as a refresher and a dessert and is great for kids and those who dislike the taste of coffee or are looking to avoid caffeine. This chocolatey treat follows the method of the original whipped coffee, but includes a variation of ingredients. This recipe requires raw egg white, which can also be replaced with coconut cream.
Ingredients: one raw egg white, two tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, two tablespoons of sugar, ice cubes, milk of choice
Step three: Slowly add in the unsweetened cocoa powder to the egg mixture and continue whisking until evenly blended
Step four: Add the mixture into a glass of milk and ice cubes and enjoy!
How to make a Spiked Whipped Coffee:
Looking for a way to spice up your day? Luckily, alcohol mixes well into this whipped coffee drink a well. Here’s the recipe for a delicious boozy coffee drink to kickstart your morning or afternoon.
Ingredients: one tablespoon of instant coffee, one tablespoon of granulated sugar, ½ tablespoon of hot water, 2 tablespoons of Cognac (or other spirit), milk of choice, ice cubes
Step one: In a bowl, combine the coffee, sugar, water and spirit and whisk until mixture becomes fluffy
Step two: Prepare a cup of ice and milk of choice
Step three: Add coffee mixture into the glass of milk and ice and enjoy!
Why you need to try this drink:
This may sound dramatic, but whipped coffee completely changed my quarantine experience. As someone who always started her day with a cup of coffee and made a habit out of frequenting my favorite cafes in the afternoon, I was on the search for a coffee recipe that could be a substitute when whipped coffee appeared all over the internet. I love how this recipe is perfect for the limitations imposed by quarantine. Moreover, it's a quick and easy way to satiate your sweet tooth with simple ingredients and minimal effort. Take it from me— a girl who takes her coffee very seriously— this make at home drink will beat your store bought alternative and comes at a mere sliver of the price. So for all you coffee fanatics out there reading this post, whipped coffee is a must-try that you can make in your kitchen today.
