What to eat this summer: trending cocktails, cuisines, and ingredients.
It feels a lot like summer.. 5 food trends that you need to know about!
This year is all about transformation and innovation in the food industry. Apart from the booze-free beverages and pickled foods that stay trendy for the year, there are a lot of transformational trends on the way.
Here in Amsterdam, at our Fashion Potluck HQ, it’s that time of the year when people are taking their boats for a ride around the lovely canals, enjoying every bit of sunlight or throwing weekend barbecue parties in the park. As it’s slowly starting to feel like summer here in Amsterdam, we are sure some of you girls from around the world are already enjoying your sunny beach weekends or planning your summer getaways to exotic destinations. With us women there’s always the question: Are we really ready for the summer? Being healthy is an important goal, but so is pleasure eating.
Looking for some food inspiration this summer? Here go five of our favorites.
1.Timut pepper drinks
This year’s food is full of hot palettes of seasonings and spices. The timut pepper is predicted by top chefs and food organizations of the industry to be the next top condiment of 2018. However, this is not the regular Bloody Mary’s tangy pepper flavor that we all know. With its spicy grapefruit-like flavor, the timut pepper from Nepal is about to become a main ingredient not only for food, but also for cocktail recipes. Cocktails like the infamous Gin Tonic are on the way to be completely transformed. Instead of the clean bitter flavor, now you can enjoy a fresh and bold fusion of this oriental spicy, grapefruit-cucumber-like flavor that gives that bit of an extra kick to your drink. You should be able to find and try this interesting fusion of flavors in your regular bar destination this summer at a price not much more different than a regular cocktail. For all those of you ladies who’d like to spice it up this summer, this is a must. For all the others who are not really a fan of spicy, but feel a bit more adventurous, go for it!
2. Nootropics (Mexican; South American); Hawaiian cuisine; West African cuisine
This summer exotic and diverse cuisines are in the spotlight. Whether it’s going to be a freshly baked Mexican Enchilada, a Peruvian Arepa, a sushi Poke bowl from Hawaii or a West African Gingery Scotch bonnet stew, it’s all worth trying this summer. All these dishes are easy and fun to prepare because they give you the freedom to experiment and try different combinations of your favorite ingredients. While doing our research we thought- “Well, why not bake some Arepa corn-flour mini bread cakes next time instead and leave those boring cheese muffins we are used to?”.
Also, corn and seed-based dishes and drinks are on the rise. Drinks like the so called Michelada from Mexico or Chicha (corn-based beer) from South America are about to slowly take the place of popular Spanish drinks such as the Sangria. There is nothing better than a refreshing Michelada with a bit of tangy finish in the hot summer days. It is easy and fun to make- all you need is a lime, chili powder, Sriracha sauce and a bottle of your favorite beer, and you’re all set!
Along with all the exotic seasonings and spices, the so-called Nootropics like turmeric, salmon, eggs, dandelion greens and jícama, purple potato, purple corn, black quinoa and kiwicha dishes are also growing in popularity. We are excited to see what kind of new and interesting recipes will feature this rich blend of ingredients this year!
3. Plant-based protein palettes
This year food bloggers are talking about the rise of the vegan and redefined Indian cuisine. As chefs get more comfortable with using more and more ingredients like tofu, tempeh, quinoa and all other kinds of seeds, the veganism movement is growing as a trend. The list of easy and healthy recipes has been rapidly rising recently. If you are bored from all those pizzas or croquettes and you want to try something different and fresh, there are many options to choose from. How about a baked codfish cauliflower sweet potato cashew dinner or a fresh and fruity pomegranate grilled chicken baby spinach salad lunch? Sounds great, doesn’t it?! And it takes only about 30 minutes to be prepared. You can easily experiment and bring out the artist in you, making your meals truly enjoyable, with dishes full of beautiful color palettes and diverse flavor blends.
4. The fourth meal
What? A fourth meal?! In recent years we started to have much less structured meals switching breakfast with lunch or dinner with breakfast, etc. Initially the fourth meal is the final one, which we usually consider as the treat of the day. Whether it is a homemade fruit froYo icecream, fruit breakfast poke bowl or a raspberry mint chia pudding, you can enjoy your daily healthy treat without any reservations. One of our favorite treats is the colorful fruity poke bowl snack that gives us some extra energy throughout the long office days or after an exhausting workout in the weekend. What about you?
5. Heme and food tech innovations
Recently a tech-food startup called Impossible Foods is already using tech innovations to completely transform the vegetarian/ vegan world as we know it. Their goal is to provide this meaty quality of their plant-based vegetarian burgers and even reach the actual bloodiness of the meat when cooked rare. There are already a few places in the States where you can actually try it. Umami Burger in Los Angeles, for example, is one of them. The cost of this burger is a bit more expensive than the regular meat meant burger but according to online foodies it is definitely worth trying. Would you try it? We are definitely excited to see if the so called “Impossible Burger” will live up to our expectations.
As an addition to that, Amazon is also expanding to the food industry promising new voice-operated gadgets to add up to the development of smart fridges, able to record and order your very own shopping lists.
Foods & drinks this season are spicy and exquisite. Isn't it a good enough reason to make this summer unforgettable?
Let's try these "trends" together and share it here, at FashionPotluck.com. ♥
Love,
The Fashion Potluck Team.
