5 Awesome Nighttime Tips to Improve Dental Health
Many different processes occur in your mouth when you sleep. When you sleep germ and bacterias in your mouth are awake. They cause plaque buildup, tartar, cavities, or even periodontal disease. For this reason, it is important to follow some simple recommendations to prevent dental problems. Here are 7 effective nighttime tips that may help you decrease the risk of dental diseases.
1. Floss and brush teeth before a bedtime
It is important to brush teeth before bedtime. It helps prevent plaque buildup, tooth decay, and gum diseases. If you are prone to dental diseases it is recommended to brush teeth immediately after dinner and then again before bedtime.
Flossing may help you remove food debris and plaque from places that are hard-to-reach for your toothbrush. If food particles are left in the mouth for the whole night, they will feed bacterias in the oral cavity and promote their growth. Plaque that remains between the teeth may harden and turn into tartar. Tartar can only be removed by a dentist during a professional cleaning.
2. Rinse mouth with mouthwash
Most people think that mouthwash may only freshen their breath. However, mouthwash performs many important tasks and promotes good oral health. Therapeutic mouthwashes contain special ingredients that aimed at strengthening your teeth and treating certain dental conditions. Using a mouthwash before bedtime may prevent plaque formation during a night’s sleep.
It is crucial to choose a good mouthwash that contains the necessary ingredients for your oral health. Fluoride is one of the ingredients that strengthens your teeth enamel and decreases the risk of cavities. Chlorhexidine prevents plaque and diminishes the symptoms of gingivitis.
3. Use a fluoride toothpaste
Fluoride toothpaste should be an essential part of your dental care routine. Fluoride plays an important role in dental hygiene and remineralizes teeth while you sleep. After brushing, some fluoride remains on your teeth and in saliva. This makes your saliva a potent healing brew that promotes teeth health during a night’s sleep.
Fluoride also increases the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. These are two elements essential for healthy and strong enamel. Your family dentist may help you choose good toothpaste with fluoride that will promote your dental health.
4. Stay hydrated
It may be very helpful for your dental health to keep a cup of water on your nightstand. Thus, you reduce the risk of dry mouth and provide a normal saliva flow. Saliva is very important for your oral health. Saliva contains necessary chemicals that fortify and remineralize your teeth. It also washes your teeth at nighttime and eliminates bacterias from the mouth.
It is recommended to drink some water before bedtime and keep a cup near the bad. Thus you will be able to quench your night’s thirst and prevent dry mouth.
5. Cultivate your oral microbiome
Cultivating your oral microbiome is one of the best ways to improve your dental health while sleeping. Many people think that all bacterias in the mouth are bad but this not necessarily true. There are a lot of beneficial bacterias in your mouth that promote dental health. Only a few bacteria that live in your mouth metabolize the sugars and produce acids. These few bacterias are responsible for the vast majority of cavities and periodontal infections.
Eating fermented foods, foods high in fiber, and taking probiotics may provide your mouth with good bacterias. You also need to cut the intake of sugary food that promotes the growth of bad bacteria.
