Cultivating Confidence at Any Age
It's not easy to get older, but it can be fun as well. While aging often comes with aches and pains, as well as hormone changes that result in mood swings or emotional turmoil, it also means that you have fewer responsibilities and time to do the things that you love. Have you always dreamed of visiting the Galápagos Islands? Have you always wanted to be a polyglot? Well, now that you're retired and any kids you have are off participating in the rat race, it's time to do it all.
Often, the trouble is that physical and mental health challenges get in the way of a golden age of adventure. For women who are going through menopause or perimenopause, getting on an airplane or attending a language class may seem impossible. After all, it's hard enough just to manage the night sweats, migraines, and hot flashes. Who can imagine thinking about another goal besides just getting through the day? If you're a mature woman who is facing menopause symptoms head-on, but you also want to feel confident and take advantage of these years, there are options out there to help you. Read on for some helpful tips that will boost your confidence in no time.
Virtual therapy is a great option.
Everyone associates menopause with hot flashes, but not everyone understands the emotional strain that living with an ongoing hormone shift, dealing with night sweats, and managing vaginal dryness can take on a person. Mental health is one area of treating menopause symptoms that just doesn't get enough focus, although it should. It's not easy to just go about your life when your estrogen supply has gone haywire and is making you feel crazy.
During the era of COVID-19, many women going through menopause or perimenopause are going it alone because they feel that seeing a mental health professional in their office is dangerous. They're right—seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist in close quarters while COVID-19 is a threat is a bad idea. Fortunately, virtual therapy has become increasingly available, and it's quite safe. An online psychologist or psychiatrist can treat you during a virtual therapy session just as well as they could during an in-person session. Don't avoid seeing a mental health professional because you're afraid of COVID-19. Use virtual therapy over Zoom or Skype to get the help you need. Once your mental health is under control, you'll certainly feel more confident and able to do everything you dreamed of doing.
Knowledge is power.
One of the scary things about menopause or perimenopause is that, because hormones and anything to do with the menstrual cycle is so taboo, menopausal women are often in the dark about what's causing their symptoms. This is another case in which the internet may be the best way to empower yourself with information. How can menopausal women feel confident if they don't even know what's going on in their own bodies?
It doesn't have to be this way. Actually, by taking a simple quiz online, such as an "am I in menopause quiz," women can find out what's going on with them. From there, plenty of medical information is available online to explain everything from estrogen levels to what your ovaries are doing and why. Even vaginal dryness won't feel as threatening when you understand the causes behind it. You'll see that, once you have information about your hormone changes, and learn about whether hormone therapy might help manage the menopause symptoms, you'll feel more confident and less helpless.
Don't let anyone tell you what you can or can't do.
The media is full of all kinds of ideas about what women should and shouldn't do with their bodies, and women have been internalizing that information for their whole lives. The truth is, though, that it's a good idea to throw those ideas right in the garbage. Your body is your body, and if you want to wear a peekaboo bikini at the beach, or lingerie when you go on a date, it should be your business and no one else's.
Menopausal women and postmenopausal women are sexy and desirable, and one way of getting the confidence to feel that way is to just own it. Who says that you can't wear a bikini, nude swimwear, or lingerie? Who says that you can't go on dates and get wined and dined? Who says that your body language can't exude the confidence of a runway model? It's your time of life, and everyone else can get over their hangups about the natural progression of the female body. If you want a bikini, go out and get one.
Aging with confidence is hard, but it can be easier. Make use of the tools at hand to make your life easier. Online therapy sessions, an online quiz, and sites that provide detailed information about menopause symptoms, and positive self-talk are just some of the ways to ensure ongoing confidence. Get it, girl.
