What I spend in a week as a 31 year old living in Romania
I’ve seen that the series of what I spend in a week became very popular on Youtube and I thought I would make a reinterpretation on a blog post with details of what I spend in a week as a millennial living in Romania, Cluj-Napoca. I know that the cost of living here is so much less than almost every other western European country and also, since we are in the “semi-quarantine” mode there is a lot less spending to be made. I will try to add up expenses that are paid once a month and divide them by 4 weeks. So let’s get started:
Housing: 500 euros/month -> 125 euros per week ~ This is a loan, I own the apartment and this is the amount that I have to pay for the next 10 years for it to be mine.
Car maintenance: 4 euros per week ~ I own the car, it was bought second hand, the overall cost per year is around 200 euros.
Gas for my car: 5 euros ~ I don’t do much driving since I am working from home.
Utilities: 25 euros per week ~ Including: Internet, electricity and gas.
Parking space: 7.5 euros per week
Grocery shopping: 60 euros ~ I am cooking mostly at home during the week.
Takeout food: 15 euros ~ Usually we order food twice a week, during the weekend, last week we did it only once.
Alcohol: 10 euros ~ Because who survives without it? Also, we have friends over so we need to have beer or wine during the weekend.
Pets: 30 euros ~ We have 2 cats and a dog and this is for the food and products we need for them.
Shopping: 50 euros ~ Trying to cut back in this department.
Sports: 0 ~ I am doing the online workouts from Youtube for free.
Books & Magazines: 5 euros ~ I buy magazines or books every other week.
A total of 336.5 euros I would get to spend on a week where I would go the maximum of the shopping budget. Yet I do feel like this is more of a usual week, since there will be times when the amount will increase by a lot if I have to take one of my pets to the vet, or if I have any health issues that require medical assistance or drugs, or if I get any car troubles. There are may expenses that cannot be foreseen, therefore it's important to have an emergency fund. Another thing is related to saving and investing, I try to save as much as possible and pay off in advance my apartment so I can decrease the amount paid in bank interest.
I do say that seeing all of the expenses laid down I realized how much money I spend on items that are not necessities and where I can improve. I really do recommend this exercise for anyone who is planning to save or invest more in 2021.

Julia M :
Pretty interesting, especially after our FP webinar on managing finances! I am a bit surprised, as I would expect the costs in Romania to be lower! Thank you for sharing!

Thank you, indeed I was a little bit surprised myself after I added those up, Cluj is pretty expensive, comparable to many cities in EU :-*
