8 Amazing Soft Foods to Eat After Dental Surgery
Both dental surgery and recovering from it can be a bit stressful. The recovery process requires certain lifestyle changes. After the procedure, your dentist will provide you with aftercare instructions. One recommendation will be to switch to a soft-food diet. This means consuming soft foods that will not irritate the surgery site.
This requirement can be quite shocking, but there are a lot of foods that are soft, healthy, and very tasty. Below you can find the eight best foods for a smooth recovery after dental surgery.
1. Avocado
Avocado is a very popular fruit that has many health benefits. It has a creamy and soft texture, that makes it a perfect food for people who have undergone dental surgery. Avocado is full of nutrients that will benefit your skin, hair, heart, and brain. This fruit also promotes the absorption of antioxidants. Thus, it may potentially boost the healing processes in your organism.
You may consume avocado in the form of salsa, ice cream, or smoothie. However, mashed avocado is the best way to get all of its health benefits, especially if you are recovering from dental surgery.
2. Soup
Soup is an ideal food during the first days after dental surgery. Pureed vegetable soups are healthy and easy to eat. They don’t contain small pieces of food that may stick in the surgery area. Vegetable soups are also rich in important nutrients such as potassium, vitamin A, and fiber.
If you want a chicken noodle soup, then separate all solid ingredients from the broth or blend them smoothly. Avoid eating hot soup, since hot temperature may irritate a surgery site.
3. Mashed potato
Mashed potato is perfect for people after dental surgery. This food has a soft texture, creamy taste, and is rich in fiber. Mashed potato also contains vitamin C. This vitamin supports the immune system, aids collagen production, iron absorption, and boosts the healing process. Make sure to blend your potato thoroughly. Eat it lukewarm or cold to prevent irritation.
If you prefer the sweet taste, choose a sweet potato instead of a common potato. This product has the same health benefits as a regular one.
4. Hummus
Hummus is a Mediterranean dish made of chickpeas, olive oil, lemon juice, and garlic. It is loaded with antioxidants, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids. Humus has many health benefits such as maintaining good digestion, lowering cholesterol levels, and balancing blood sugar levels. Hummus has a smooth texture so it is considered a perfect food after dental surgery including a tooth implant procedure.
5. Yogurt
Yogurt is a very healthy food that has a light consistency. These features make yogurt perfect food for people who undergo dental surgery. Choose yogurt without any granola, seeds, or other chewable ingredients. If your doctor prescribed you antibiotics after dental surgery they may affect your digestion. Yogurt will help you improve digestion and relieve the side effects of antibiotics.
6. Oatmeal
Oats are very healthy food. They contain a lot of important nutrients that our body needs. If you are recovering after dental surgery then choose instant oatmeal. Instant oatmeal is less chewy and is easier to eat than in comparison to regular oatmeal after dental surgery. Oatmeal is high in antioxidants, supports healthy cholesterol levels, and can help reduce blood sugar. This will help your body recover faster after surgery.
To avoid irritation, consume oatmeal at least two days after dental surgery.
7. Cottage cheese
Cottage cheese has a soft texture, it is easy to consume it, and it does not irritate the surgery site. It is a perfect source of protein and calcium. Thus it may strengthen your teeth and bones. Cottage cheese is also rich in phosphorus. This ingredient may help improve digestion if you are taking antibiotics.
8. Eggs

Hannah R :
I'll have to remember these - hoping to get my wisdom teeth removed (all at once, eek) once we're back to normal! I had a minor op last year where I had an incision made in my gum to allow my wisdom tooth to grow through and it took a whole 10 days before I could eat and speak normally, so have a feeling I'm not going to have the best time once I have them properly removed...
