8 Good Habits to Keep Your Smile Stunning
If you want to have healthy teeth and gums, it is essential to take care of them. You need to maintain proper oral hygiene, eat healthy foods, visit your dentist regularly, etc. There are a lot of oral issues and other factors that can significantly worsen the condition of your oral cavity. In this article, we have gathered eight good habits to keep your smile stunning.
1. Brush your teeth twice a day
Regular and thorough tooth brushing is deemed one of the most important parts of proper oral hygiene. Tooth brushing helps remove dental plaque, food, particles, and bacteria from your mouth, refresh your breath and even make your teeth whiter if you use teeth whitening toothpaste. To achieve better results, it is essential to brush your teeth in the morning before meals and in the evening after meals.
2. Use dental floss daily
Many people tend to neglect to floss since they think that tooth brushing is enough. But the reality is that even the most thorough tooth brushing can’t guarantee the complete removal of food particles and dental plaque. Additionally, food and plaque can accumulate between your teeth and it is possible to reach them only with dental floss.
3. Undergo teeth cleaning
Teeth cleaning is an in-office procedure during which a dental hygienist gently removes tartar build-up and dental plaque from your teeth and interdental space. You should know that tartar is a hard deposit that occurs on your teeth. It creates the perfect environment for bacteria that can cause gum disease. Moreover, tartar accumulation on your teeth can significantly worsen the look of your smile.
4. Maintain a healthy diet
If you want to keep your teeth and gums healthy, you need to pay sufficient attention to the foods and drinks you consume. You need to eat more dairy products, fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, fish, nuts, and eggs. It is important to avoid or at least limit the consumption of sweet and acidic foods and drinks since they can promote the development of tooth decay and gum disease. Additionally, high-pigmented foods can stain your teeth.
5. Drink enough water
Plain water is essential for your overall health including the condition of your oral cavity. It helps flush away bacteria and food particles from your mouth. Additionally, sufficient water consumption increases salivation that prevents the development of the dry mouth. This condition causes bad breath, taste disorders, oral thrush, lips cracking, sore throat, and other unpleasant symptoms.
6. Get rid of bad habits
Smoking is considered one of the worst habits for your teeth and gums since it can cause teeth discoloration, bad breath, tartar accumulation, and gum disease. However, there are a lot of other bad habits that can affect your oral cavity. For example, using wooden toothpicks, gnawing ice, and chewing hard objects can lead to gum injuries, scratched tooth enamel, and even tooth fractures.
7. Treat all oral issues in time
If you have noticed at least some symptoms of oral issues, it is better to make an appointment with a dentist. For example, if your gums are red, swollen, and bleeding, it can be a sign of developing gum disease. You should understand that oral conditions don’t disappear on their own and only a dentist can perform proper gum disease treatment.
8. Visit a dentist on a regular basis
In addition to timely treatment, you also need to visit a dentist twice a year for examination. The point is that many oral issues can develop asymptomatically for you. A professional dentist can easily recognize the early signs of many conditions and treat them fast and effectively.
