8 Warning Signs of Constipation That You Need to Know
Constipation is a serious health condition when you have less than three bowel movements in a week. The normal frequency of bowel movements can vary from person to person. If you suspect you are constipated, you need to pay attention to the other symptoms that come along with rare bowel movements.
Below are 8 most common symptoms of constipation.
Causes of constipation
There are several causes of constipation. The most common include low intake of fiber, dehydration, ignoring the urge to go to the toilet, and not being physically active. The changes in your diet routine can also affect your bowel movements. Some underlying conditions like pelvic floor disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, bowel obstruction, and rectal cancer can cause constipation as well.
Symptoms of constipation
1. Changes in frequency
Some people think that constipation occurs when you don’t have bowel movements. You can still have bowel movements during constipation but less frequently. Instead of your normal bowel movements 4 times a week, you may have it only twice or once.
2. Bloating and gas
Constipation usually causes swelling. This happens because stool is stuck and gains bulk. As a result, a gas that your body usually produces gets trapped behind the stool. This results in bloating and causes your stomach to become expanded.
3. Changes in stool appearance
Most people think that constipation is characterized by a decrease in the frequency of bowel movements or their absence. But you may have regular bowel movements while being constipated. If you have constipation, the stool may become hard and pebble-like. You may also be able to go a little, but not empty completely.
4. Fatigue
Constipation causes a wide variety of symptoms that can worsen your overall well-being. Because of constipation, you can even become tired and fatigued. Fatigue can also happen because of dehydration or because of the underlying causes of constipation.
5. Abdominal pain
Abdominal pain is another common symptom of constipation. The pain develops because of bloating and excessive gas accumulation. The trapped stool may become surprisingly uncomfortable and cause painful pressure.
6. Decreased appetite
Constipation can make you feel full even if you aren't eating enough. When the stool is backed up in your intestines you might experience a bit of trapped gas as well. Poor appetite can also cause feelings of lethargy.
7. Hemorrhoids
During your bowel movements, constipation can cause you to strain too much to push out the stool. Excessive straining can result in swelling of the arteries, veins, and tissues surrounding the anus, leading to hemorrhoids. They may be both internal or external and cause symptoms like itching, bleeding after wiping, and discomfort during bowel movements. If you suspect you have hemorrhoids, visit a gastroenterology center to get them treated.
8. Back pain
Back pain is another common sign of constipation. Back pain caused by constipation usually develops in the lower or mid-back. This happens because stool is trapped in your lower intestines and causes pressure in your back.
Constipation treatment options
Regardless of the cause, the doctor may suggest several treatment options. If constipation is caused by a poor diet, the doctor may recommend eating more fiber and drinking plenty of water. If you have constipation, it is better to limit your intake of dairy products, processed foods, and meat because these foods can make constipation worse. Physical activity may also help you maintain regular bowel movements.
If digestive issues like bacterial imbalance caused constipation, opt for supplements with prebiotics and probiotics to restore the balance. If your symptoms don’t improve after diet adjustments, the doctor may suggest laxatives.
