Why go for homemade skin and hair care products? 8 DIY recipes you need to try!
Natural vs Drugstore beauty products
Since the dawn of times, skin and hair care has been a trendy topic for us women. How to keep our skin fresh and nourished and our hair healthy and strong? This has always been a great challenge for every woman. Nowadays, there are numerous skin and hair care brands on the market that provide various kinds of products for all skin and hair types. Some brighten your skin and make your skin tone even, minimizing any imperfections. In the case of hair, some might nourish and energize damaged hair. But are they actually good for our skin and hair?
A lot of beauty care products on the market supposedly contain organic ingredients. They may also contain other ingredients that might be harmful in the long run. The majority of commercially-produced beauty care products are generally packed, with artificial colors and aromas, preservatives and other stabilizers in order to give you all those promised benefits- written on the labels.
In order to avoid premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, and clogged pores in the future, try to gradually switch your beauty routine towards the unprocessed organic products. You don’t need to buy those luxury creams with the inviting prefix “Natural”. The secret is simple – feed your skin with what you feed yourself.
Natural beauty products and their benefits
Using unprocessed whole-food ingredients on your skin, many of which are usually part of your daily meals, will make you fall in love with your skin and hair. And you have the freedom to use a variety of natural products such as coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, raw honey, avocado, aloe vera, etc. Depending on your skin type you can create a great blend of natural ingredients that best fits your skin needs and achieve this “budget-friendly” natural beauty goal.
That is why, I want to share with all of you, Fashion Potluck ladies, easy and fun ways to make your own completely organic skin and hair care products that you will love! I already had a lot of fun mixing our own face masks and beauty hair nourishing elixirs. Now’s your turn!
I selected 8 of my personal favourite DIY completely natural skin and hair care product recipes, some of which I am proud to share with you as my very own creations.
Face

You skin will absolutely love this rich in vitamins (B, C, A & D) and minerals (calcium, zinc, magnesium, etc.) nourishing face mask. It is very gentle so you can use it several times a week. It is really easy to make and affordable as you most probably already have these ingredients in your kitchen.
2. Pumpkin, Honey Nourishing Mask

- 1 tbsp cooked pumpkin
- 1 tsp raw honey
- 1 tsp liquid vitamin E (optional)
Or
- 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (optional)
Method:
Mix the mashed pumpkin with raw honey until you get a smooth paste. Then, you can add either 1 teaspoon of liquid vitamin E for some extra nourishment, or 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar for more brightening effect. After applying the mask, leave it on your skin for 15 minutes. Finally, rinse with cool water. This mask is suitable for all skin types.
3. Yogurt, Coffee and Honey Face Mask
3. Yogurt, Coffee and Honey Face Mask
Ingredients:
- Coffee beans
- Yogurt
- Oatmeal
Method:
Grind the coffee beans and the oatmeal and mix them with the honey to make a fine paste. Apply on your face and neck. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash it off with warm water.
This mask is suitable for all skin types. It enriches the skin and brings out the natural healthy glow of your skin. Coffee and oatmeal are known for their exfoliating properties. Also, coffee is a strong antioxidant that increases blood circulation, which results in healthy skin.
4. Active charcoal, Sugar and Honey Face and Body Detox Scrub
Ingredients:
- 1tbsp active charcoal
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp raw honey
Method:
Mix the active charcoal with the raw honey until you get a smooth paste and then add the brown sugar to it. Prepare your skin by washing it with warm water so that the pores are open and ready to be completely purified. Apply to your face or body gently massaging it in circular motion. Leave it for about 20 minutes and wash it off with warm water. If you apply it on your body, you can also wrap it with cling film.
This exfoliating mask (scrub) is deeply purifying because of the active charcoal’s powerful toxin absorbing features. This scrub is actually one of our personal creations and favourites. It is suitable for all skin types and it leaves your skin fresh and smooth. The active charcoal is not something that we usually have in our kitchen but you should be able to find it in your regular drugstore or even order it online.
And why not make your very own bottle of face toner?
5. Rose and Lavender Face Toner for Sensitive Skin
Ingredients:
- ½ bottle of rose water
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel
- 6 drops lavender essential oil
- 4 drops chamomile essential oil
Method:
Add all the ingredients to a bottle of your preferences, close the bottle, shake it, and voila! Preferably you should shake it every time before you use it so that all the oils mix well with the rose water and aloe vera for perfect results. You can keep it for up to three months, so in case you make a few bottles at a time you can always put an expiration date label on the bottle just to be sure, saving time and effort. This way you can save time and effort. All the ingredients you need for this toner are easy to find and to order online. The rose water is especially easy to make even by yourself. You just brew some rose petals and leave it to cool down for 10-15 minutes so that the petals release all the natural oils you need in the water. This is a very easy to make recipe. Try it yourself!

6. Strengthening Hair Mist
Ingredients:
- 1 cup brewed nettle tea
- 1 cup brewed chamomile tea
- 2 tbsp aloe vera gel
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
Method:
Brew all the herbs on low temperature for about 5 minutes. After obtaining a simmer mix, let it cool and strain it. Add the herbal tea mixture into a bottle of your preference, along with the aloe gel and lavender oil. Finally, shake to mix it well. Keep it in the fridge. You can apply it on clean wet hair and style it as usual. This recipe consists of ingredients used in the previous one, so it is also an easy and budget-friendly one.
7. Hair Serum for Hair Growth
Ingredients:
- ½ bottle of castor oil
- ¼ almond oil
- ¼ liquid vitamin E
Method:
Mix all the oils together in a bottle of your preference and shake well. This is also a recipe of our own which we think you will absolutely love! This rich nourishing serum is perfect also for your eyelashes and eyebrows. For best results you can apply on your hair before you go to sleep, put on a simple shower cap and leave it to stay overnight. Wash your hair in the morning and you’re all set. You can use it once or twice a week depending on the desired results.
For your eyelashes and eyebrows you can just use your empty mascara bottle. Wash it well, let it dry and pour the mixture inside so that you can easily apply it with the mascara brush. This way it is really easy because you apply just the right amount of the serum. Otherwise, you can also use a regular brush for brows to apply the serum.
This serum is our personal favourite and we, at Fashion Potluck, absolutely love it!
Tip: You can always add or substitute the almond oil with argan oil. You can check out Una's Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil review.
