LIFESTYLE

Coffee is one of the most loved drinks around the world. Millions of people rely on it to start their day or get through a busy afternoon. It’s full of antioxidants and contains nutrients like magnesium and B vitamins. Some studies even suggest that regular coffee drinkers may have a lower risk of health issues like type 2 diabetes, liver disease, or certain cancers.
That said, coffee isn’t perfect for everyone. While it does have health benefits, drinking too much or having it at the wrong time can lead to a few problems. If you’re a regular coffee drinker, you might have noticed some of these issues yourself.
Let’s go over 7 common side effects coffee lovers might face and what you can do about them.
1. Caffeine Withdrawal
If you’ve ever skipped your morning coffee, you might have noticed a headache, fatigue, or irritability. That’s caffeine withdrawal. It’s one of the most common issues coffee drinkers experience.
Caffeine is a stimulant, and when your body gets used to it, suddenly stopping can cause these short-term symptoms. They’re usually not dangerous, just uncomfortable.
If you're trying to cut back, it's a good idea to reduce your caffeine intake gradually rather than all at once. The symptoms usually last a few days, and after that, most people feel back to normal — or even better.
2. Burning Your Tongue
It’s not uncommon to take a big sip of hot coffee and burn your tongue and mouth. Luckily, you can quickly solve the problem by drinking cold milk. The cool liquid will relieve the pain, and the fats in the milk will coat the tender areas and provide protection.
3. Stomach Trouble
For some people, coffee can upset the stomach. You might feel bloated, get cramps, or feel the urge to use the bathroom shortly after drinking it. While this isn’t harmful, it can be uncomfortable and annoying, especially if it happens regularly.
One way to reduce these symptoms is to avoid drinking coffee on an empty stomach. Have it with breakfast or shortly afterward. If you use milk or cream in your coffee and still have digestive issues, you might also want to check if you're lactose intolerant.
4. Stained Teeth
Have you noticed your teeth have become darker due to coffee? Teeth can go from white to yellow for multiple reasons. But coffee is a significant cause of tooth staining. This drink contains intense color pigments called chromogens. Chromogens tend to attach to the white part of your tooth enamel when consumed frequently. If you want to whiten your teeth, talk to your dentist about available options.
5. Trouble Sleeping
Even though coffee has its benefits, drinking it too late in the day can mess with your sleep. Caffeine stays in your system for several hours, and for some people, it can take up to 10 hours to fully wear off.
If you have a hard time falling asleep or wake up often at night, try cutting off coffee in the early afternoon. For most people, stopping between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. gives your body enough time to process the caffeine before bedtime.
6. Feeling Jittery or Anxious
Some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others. One day you might feel great after a cup of coffee, but the next, you could feel shaky or anxious. These symptoms usually show up after drinking too much or having coffee on an empty stomach.
If you notice a fast heartbeat, restlessness, or uneasiness after drinking coffee, try cutting back. One to two cups per day is usually enough for most people. Pay attention to how your body reacts and adjust your intake accordingly.
7. Bad Breath
Coffee can sometimes cause bad breath. This happens because it reduces how much saliva your mouth produces. When there’s less saliva, bacteria can grow more easily, which leads to an unpleasant smell.
To deal with this, drink water alongside your coffee to help wash away bacteria. You can also chew sugar-free gum to keep your mouth moist. Just don’t brush your teeth immediately after drinking coffee — wait about 30 minutes, as the acid in coffee can temporarily soften tooth enamel.
