9 Tips on How to Decorate a Windowsill With Indoor Plants
Flowers on the windowsill sometimes cause mixed feelings. Most of us think that they create dusty jungles that interfere with daylight. Such associations make many people avoid indoor flowers, preferring to leave windowsills empty. However, everything could be different. Green plants can be used as a decoration. Flowers on the windowsill can look fresh and stylish in good interiors.
If you are going to buy some plants, take into account the peculiarities of their growing. For example, shade-tolerant flowers planted on the south side are more likely to have a pale appearance. Choose the plants that you like, or build an exposition through a selection of interesting flower pots. In this article, we gathered these nine tips on how to decorate a windowsill with indoor plants.
1. The less in better
It is most reliable to follow the path of limitation. This means that two large magnificent plants are preferable to an assortment of ten slurred plants. The empty space around the plant on the windowsill will attract more attention to the pot than if it turns out to be part of a single green mass.
2. Choose one big pot for all plants
Any problems with the quantity, color, and design of the pots can be avoided if you plant your entire garden in one box, container, or flowerpot. The main thing is that all plants in it are satisfied with a single schedule of watering and lighting.
3. Make a composition
Flowers and pots are completely optional on the windowsill. It can be still interesting with only one flower or without any. Some pots even don’t need flowers and can successfully act as self-contained decor items.
4. Consider plants size
If the windowsill is small, you can easily decorate it with succulents and other tiny plants. Mini-gardens are in trend now and the choice of suitable flower pots is fabulously rich. The main thing is not to deviate from the general line and support the idea of a single size. You can also plant little flowers in glass flasks or, cups, mugs, milk jugs, sugar bowls.
5. A garden on the windowsill
You can even organize a mini-garden on your windowsill. Such plants are beautiful, tasty, and healthy. You can set up a garden of herbs on the windowsill, paint the pots with slate paint and sign all of them.
6. Dress your pots
It happens that flowers adorn the windowsill for a long time and look well-groomed but you want to change something. If you are tired of old pots and the familiar landscape, you can dress your pots. There is a huge variety of different flower pots on the market. However, replacing all old flowerpots with new can be quite difficult because each flower needs its own size. A simpler option is to wrap the pots with paper. You can also or knit pot “clothes” for the season. In addition, rearrangement will help revive the exposition.
7. Horizontal and vertical layers
You can make a shelf for plants across the window. Despite the fact that it closes a lot of light, such a shelf gives additional floral places. However, you should think about how you will wash the glass and open windows for ventilation.
If you don’t like the idea of a shelf, you can hang potted plants. Traditionally, plants are hung near the window frame, but this is not the only option. For example, hooks can allow you to attach a flower pot anywhere you want.
8. Arrange a few levels
Even if the windowsill is quite wide, it is better not to put pots of the same size one after another. No one will see the second row unless these are large plants that cover all the rest. It is better to think about how to organize several levels. You can put a flower table in front or just below the windowsill. If its width allows, you can also place flowers in several tiers.
9. Rhythm and symmetry
The principle of placing flowers on the windowsill can also form the basis of your concept. For example, most of us like rhythm and symmetry. Try to arrange flowers at the same distance along the plane of the window sill. However, don’t put plants to close to each other. Every flower needs enough room and air to be healthy and beautiful.
