The Kylie Jenner Lip Kit - Why You Should Save Your Money and Not Buy it

With all the buzz and extreme popularity of the Kylie Jenner lip kits when they first launched back in 2015, I remember immediately wanting to possess my very own and frantically checking the site weekly to purchase one as they would sell out in minutes. As someone who is a fan and really does keep up with the Kardashians/Jenners, I remember having very high expectations for the products in the lip kit and having no doubt they would satisfy. Unfortunately, I was left a little disappointed and have stopped investing in any products from Kylie Cosmetics from now on.

My Experience with the Kylie Jenner Lip Kit

I received my first lip kit in the color Candy K in early January of 2016 when Kylie only had the kits available exclusively in three colors- Candy K, Dolce K, and True Brown K. After seeing the posts on Instagram surrounded by loads of hype from ads, influencers, and fans, I was so excited to try her lipstick and really have the signature Kylie lip everyone was going after. However, upon the use of the lip liner and liquid matte lipstick, I found my lips to be super dried out and even cracked/having every line on my bottom lip show very prominently. I understand that matte liquid lipsticks have a very drying effect, but no previous matte lipsticks I've used from other brands- such as MAC- ever made my lips so cracked! I take care of my lips and keep them moisturized/hydrated so it was frustrating to see such results with no good solution (I even tried putting on a lip scrub before application). The liquid matte lipstick was very pigmented, soft, and airy/light on the lips and did last all day, but did not present well at all after use (especially if you do not have lip injections). I never used the color Candy K again either as I found it to look odd against my skin tone and was also very annoyed that I couldn't try it on beforehand because of drastically it differed in real life vs. how it was depicted on others in the Instagram posts and ads I had seen. I actually did not mind the lip liner and found it to be acceptable but the liquid lipstick was a BIG no for me.

    Price

Not to mention, Kylie sells her lip kits for $29 + shipping and taxes- not too expensive but definitely not worth the price with the quality of the product.

    Formula

There have been claims that Kylie Cosmetics actually uses an almost identical formula for her lip products as the brand ColourPop. In fact, if you compare the ingredients of the lipsticks from both brands side by side, you will not notice much disparity. Not to mention, the ColourPop lipsticks are much cheaper (only $6 each), reflecting the actual worth and quality of such lipsticks. If anything, it's almost like Kylie Jenner slapped her name onto a ColourPop liquid lipstick and lip liner and is selling the same things for a much higher price. If you happen to be a fan of her lip kits, I suggest saving money and purchasing products from ColourPop who also seem to sell similar shades to Kylie.

    Conclusion

Personally, I found myself to not be a big fan of the formula and feel of the lipsticks. I expected the lipsticks to look like smooth matte butter on my lips rather than a severely cracked and lined shell. I would not waste my money on Kylie Cosmetic lip kits again- even with the formula changes she occasionally implements. I actually purchased the color Kristen after she announced a formula change and was still not satisfied. I would rather spend the same amount of money and invest in matte lipsticks from brands such as MAC,  Clinique, or Anastasia Beverly Hills.  Furthermore, if you still desire the look of the Kylie Jenner lip kit, save some money and buy the dupe from ColourPop!

Thank you for sharing your experience, Tiara! Your honesty is much appreciated. I've always been curious about Kylie Cosmetics. I'm sorry to hear about your disappointment, though. It's unfortunate that no one is 100% transparent on instagram x
