XOXO, Gossip Girl

A series that defined the ideal of a generation. When the first season premiered, I was in high-school, the same age as the “Upper East Side elite”, so dreaming of their life, wardrobe and grace has followed me all the way to college. With a new revival of the series just a few months away, many of us, 90’s kids, wonder just how the new band will look and act like.

Until we will see the new cast, get the new drama, there is also a last chance of seeing the original series on Netflix, they will take it down on the 31s of December.  I know for sure I was surprised when I saw the ‘news”, especially since I stopped watching after season 4. In the last couple of weeks I’ve made a marathon of the last 3 seasons that made me question why I loved it so much in the first place.

Leaving aside the glamor and the personal charm of Blake Lively and Leighton Meester, the series is a soap opera where everybody is dating everybody and nobody is accountable for their action. A world filled with wealthy kids that have the world at their feet just because they come with a good pedigree. If we dig a little bit deeper we see that none of them have any capabilities, cannot hold on to a job if their life depends on this and they are always rescued by the money of their parents.

Blair is always looking down on people and wants to be a royal no matter the cost, she is the ultimate b*tch when it comes to highschool and collage, she has minions (aka slaves) and the attitude of the ultimate brat.

Serena is relying on her beauty, she is a party girl that gets in trouble and counts on other people to bail her out. Forever in love with the wrong person, yet each time someone becomes available for her she pulls the “not a good time” card and leaves.

Chuck, the bad boy that has a tormented past, therefore all of his actions are supposed to be made even by this. In the first seasons he is the villain, but turns into a good guy just because he is in love with Blair. His character, just as Serena’s has been rewritten that I am under the impression the people that wrote the screenplays were high or smth.

Nate is the ultimate boy next door, a pretty face that helps him get out of every trouble. The character is indeed an integer one, from the gang he is the only one that puts other people's needs above his. If I were to choose I would say that it is the only one that didn’t seem to be bipolar.

Dan, the renegade that turns into the psycho that was Gossip Girl. And here my darlings, is the biggest hole in the plot. At least for the first part of the series there were items that  were imposibile for Dan to know. Also, for the real fans that actually bothers to read some of the books, we all know that Gossip Girl was a girl. The character was a pretty great one, up until he was turned into the villain. Also, falling for Blair??? Really?

All in all, looking into retrospective, I understand why the 16th old year old me loved the series. The 30th year old me finds it shallow if we strip the glamorous dresses and accessories. It’s still a great inspiration, even after 10 years I would wear anything that was featured, something that I cannot say about Emily in Paris. The second looks like a parrot in comparison to the style of the first.

I am still a few episodes away from finishing the series and I am not sure if I am masochistic or not, yet I do look forward to seeing how the next generation will be pictured and if the ones making the series change the way the characters are portrayed. I would love to see less privileges just because they are coming from wealthy families, but let’s face it, that was the appeal of the series to begin with.

We just have to wait and see, until then XOXO…
